Human Rights Watch has called on the Chinese government to immediately release Taiwan-based publisher Li Yanhe (李延賀), also known by his pen name Fu Cha (富察)

“The Chinese authorities have imprisoned Fu Cha for daring to publish books on China that they don’t like,” said Maya Wang, associate China director at HRW

After she was detained on Tues, #RumeysaOzturk’s atty filed a petition in federal district court in Boston challenging the legality of her #detention & asking she not be moved out of Massachusetts.

“(Ozturk) shall not be moved outside the District of Massachusetts without first providing advance notice of the intended move,” District Judge Indira Talwani…wrote Tues in an order. Talwani ordered the govt to respond to Ozturk’s petition by Fri.

The point is to create a climate in which agents of the state routinely wear masks to conceal their identities & street #abductions are not out of the ordinary.

As a fellow on BlueSky said, “If you’re a #police officer in America & you think you need to wear a mask to do your job, you shouldn’t be a police officer in America.”

That was true enough in the old #America.

…Why was she handcuffed & pulled off the street? She had not committed a #crime; she did not present a danger. She could have been notified of the change in her #visa status by mail, given instructions to leave the country promptly, & given a deadline with which to comply.

But merely pulling #RumeysaOzturk’s visa wasn’t the point. Even having Ozturk leave the country wasn’t the point. The point was to arrest her.

…It gets worse….

On Tues evening a masked group abducted a woman off the streets of #Boston. They wore no uniforms. Their faces were covered.…

The woman being abducted is #RumeysaOzturk, a #Tufts University grad student & Turkish national w/a valid #StudentVisa. She does not appear to have been charged w/any crimes. The US govt merely says that her student #visa has been *revoked* because she “supported Hamas,” but declined to give further details.

She visits the prison armory & shakes her head approvingly while inspecting the rifles. Then she pauses in front of a cage where #HumanBeings have been posed to her liking so that she can speak to the cameras in front of a powerful visual. She is sending a message on behalf of her country.

A high-ranking American ofcl visits a prison on foreign soil which we are using to warehouse *enemies* of her regime. She appears in a fitted long-sleeve tee & active-wear slacks. There is a ballcap on her head & a pound of makeup smeared across her plasticized face. A gold Rolex Daytona—worth more than some of these men will make in their entire lives—sits proudly on her dainty wrist. Every piece of this visual is carefully engineered.

The goal is always the same, though: To use #prisoners’ bodies as weapons of political war & to do so against their will.

This is what evil, #illiberal regimes do.

Liberal regimes have standards for the treatment of prisoners. These standards are codified under the #GenevaConventions, which the #UnitedStates has signed & ratified.

Among the standards dictated by the Geneva Conventions is this: Prisoners may not be publicly exploited for purposes of #propaganda.

This Is the Land of Wolves Now

Masked agents snatching people off the street. Govt ofcls using caged prisoners for propaganda videos. We are the villains.

“They have clearly been posed by the jailers, forced to hold position so that they can be useful props for the American woman so that she can manufacture #propaganda for her regime.

“We have seen this kind of thing before. Just not from America.”

We cannot rely on the US to protect or nurture the commons. Think of the US as a giant shopping mall with guns. That’s it. That’s the whole philosophy right there.

We want to safeguard the infrastructure of civilisation, we have to do it ourselves here in the EU before it’s too late. And we can start by acknowledging our own failures and redoubling our commitment to fundamental rights and democracy (and not limit our own potential by having every single decision framed by the fucking “Single Market”).

You want to end up like the US? Then let’s keep going as we are. You want something different? We must invest in the commons, embrace our diversity, embrace equity, and move to an inclusive, post-capitalist existence.

It’s up to us. The bacteria in places we haven’t even visited yet that will survive long after we’ve made ourselves extinct – should that be the route we decide to take (because yes, it is a decision) – don’t really give two shits either way.

We regretfully have good reasons to not trust these companies with upholding our #humanrights or the values of #freedom and #equality any longer.

Even the platform I am writing this document on, #Google, owned by Alphabet inc, might choose any day to simply erase it or make links to it become unresponsive, no doubt claiming “mistake” or “glitch” but never returning my calls.

@eff @Adam_D_Schwartz @FirewallDragons I was very glad to hear Adam at 38:55 talking about how we should frequently reexamine the rules that secure our rights, in order to determine whether those rules are still adequate given recent technological developments. This point sort of looms in the background of any discussion related to privacy law these days, but it's rarely voiced directly.

On the other hand, I'm very disappointed in how timid the EFF's stance on ALPRs is. At 16:26, Adam says, "What should the public know about the surveillance technology that the government is using to spy on the public? And at the EFF, we think the answer should be, 'Everything.'" No, no, no! The answer should be, "The government cannot spy on the public!" If you ask me, no form of dragnet surveillance should exist.

For a comparison, and as Adam also points out at 50:43, there are a few technologies that the EFF hopes to ban entirely, including personalized/behavioural advertising. I remember when I first learned about that, I was shocked and extremely impressed that the EFF would be so bold as to plant their flag on a hill that essentially no one else is even discussing the possibility of trying to take. Why not do the same with ALPRs? Surely banning them would be less disruptive to current practices than banning personalized advertising would be!
