Edit - here near the end, after Stevie Wonder! Not sure why the correspondent put the mic right in people's faces, that was unnecessary and kinda the opposite of choir..!

Gerne folgen, teilen, kommentieren, konstruktiv kritisieren! :)

Obviously, being on #Mastodon chimes with a lot of the impulses of the #radio activists to build an #infrastructure over which people, not corporations, have control

But also, there are tensions between a roll-your-own-tech answer to problems of democratic control over communication, & the fact that a lot of everyday people, myself included actually, may want to participate on equal footing without having to know enough technically to spin up our own servers or build our own transmitters 6/?

(I have no idea how long this thread will be, right now 📗 is on my mind because students are reading it and we will be discussing tomorrow)

One of the lasting lessons from this project, for me, is that community #radio is an exceptionally good *metaphor* for thinking about what we might want in a communication system.

People can listen; people can speak; they're embedded in the same community, even if they don't hold the same views at all. It exists at a community scale

Part of why it doesn't feel this old is undoubtedly that it was my first book and a lot of blood sweat and tears went into every page...

But the other reason is that the #radio activists were extremely canny and prescient in their misgivings about where the internet was headed (even if the exact formations that trouble us now hadn't happened yet)

I've been waffling about whether to do a small 🧵 about this, but here's a start

My first book, Low Power to the People, is ten years old this month 📻 💚

For the research, I embedded with people who, in a moment of simply boundless enthusiasm for the internet, said, ok but we want to build community #radio stations instead
