I keep getting asked this (repeatedly).

" What about Proton VPN? I think they are in Europe."

A division of Proton is now a US-based company. Particularly, Proton Wallet. Their Terms of Services, also goes into lengths concerning Us Laws and Us Customers. It goes beyond just the CEO's support for fascism leadership (Donald Trump).

Naturally, making this list is not easy. These are two types of companies I avoided in making my list.

1) Those who actually fall under US-jurisdiction because they are based or owned by a company in the USA.

More than often, I will stumble over a company that appears to be outside the USA, but later find they are owned by another corporation based inside the USA, and so they do fall under US-jurisdiction.

2) Those who voluntarily give up their sovereignty to the United States. The 2nd type, who voluntarily gives up their sovereignty in the way of US jurisdiction, have whole sections of their terms concerning US Laws and US based customers. If a fascist government says jump, these people will ask, how high?!

Someone mentioned—correctly, I would imagine—that TikTok getting banned will/would drive sales/use of VPNs.

I realize there's been some news regarding one of the companies I'm about to mention, and I'm ignoring that for the sake of this post.

I highly recommend both Proton VPN and Mullvad. I have a paid subscription to both and I always will.

I run Proton on my router and Mullvad on my computer. The reason why applies in theory to any two VPNs that are not owned by the same parent company. In my case, Proton can see my actual IP address, and so they're aware of where my traffic is actually coming from. They are not, however, aware of the content of my traffic, because it's still encrypted by Mullvad. Contrariwise, Mullvad can see everything I'm doing, but they have no idea where any of it's actually coming from, because my connection to their server is from the Proton server that talks to my router. Unless there's something I'm unaware of, I'm as certain as anyone in my shoes reasonably can be, that both Proton and Mullvad are completely honest when they say that none of their VPN servers keep logs. If either of them are lying about that, I would be shocked. Let's just say for argument's sake, though, that the opposite is true instead, meaning that everything I do is being logged by both of them. Again: Proton knows where it's coming from but not what it is; Mullvad knows what it is but not where it's coming from. Unless I'm not understanding something, this would make historical analysis of both logs insufficient to correlate my traffic.

As a wannabe privacy advocate, I react negatively whenever anything that's not inherently illegal in my country nor should it be gets banned, just on principle. Having said that: if you're worried about the ban, don't buy a VPN to get around it. Buy two, along with a router specifically designed to run OpenWrt, and uninstall TikTok.

Thank you.

Replied to Proton

@protonprivacy @puppygirlhornypost @vfrmedia

pressing X for doubt Good #OpSec dictates to never ever rely on any provder to cover one's ass...

I just think that you overstate your #privacy claims like all those #VPN companies do to bamboozle #TechIlliterates and I find that insulting to me personally, because I'd rather have honest providers like cock.li and @monocles that will not lie into the face of customers.

But that's #NotLegalAdvice...

I just think that being honest like @tomscott is way better long-term and more beneficial to one's personal #reputation, but that's just me as a #consumer and #TechLiterate.

  • I'm shure as a #PublicCompany (not traded publicly on exchanges !!!) you do have an obligation to maximize profit and share value for your #shareholders - #Switzerland isn't that different in that regard compared to #Germany - so OFC that may not roll with your board of directors.

It's just that previous blunders left a sour taste as like a #postal service or #telco what people communicate and with whom is none of your business unless you're forced to do so for "legitimate reasons" like #ITsec or to comply with duely submitted court orders...

  • Otherwise we'll soon have #regulators and #ConsumerProtection forcing hard advertisement regulation on the entire industry with big ass disclaimers being tagged on because someone made too outrageous claims re: privacy and security...
Twitterthaddeus e. grugq on Twitter“I’m gonna tell you a secret about “logless VPNs” — they don’t exist. Noone is going to risk jail for your $5/mo https://t.co/Q2aOQJkG4g”

I like @protonprivacy, but I feel like this article side-stepped the real issue: Courts can ask them to provide data. It's great that they use encryption, store no logs (hope they don't ever make a mistake and accidentally log data they shouldn't) and their keys are stored off-site, but the threat model described above still applies: There exists data that can be recovered. Whether the data is useful or not is a different discussion.

We want to ensure everyone has free access to information.
