I've been using it since #WhatsApp got bought by Facebook / Meta, so more than 10 years! It's been really good, with a few flaws like not being able to keep your data if you change from an iPhone to Android (or conversely), and the call quality is sometimes not ideal, but it's nice to have end-to-end encryption.

I feel broken today.

I had to make a new #WhatsApp account. I did not want to make a new account there, even with a different phone number, but I had to.

I was told by my father's spouse that my choice to delete my WhatsApp account was insane. She argued plenty about how it's an important tool in today's life in my country.

But what really broke me is that she compared me to my far more paranoid brother as a result.

My brother doesn't have a smartphone. He uses Linux instead of Windows or Mac. He has done far more than just not having WhatsApp to the point where everyone and me finds him really annoying to deal with.

And yet, the sole decision to delete WhatsApp merited her to put me at the same insanity level as him.

Not only was I personally hurt, but I came to realize how astonishingly deep #Meta's claws have been dug in my country.

I knew I couldn't argue with them. I tried to argue about using RCS instead of WhatsApp before. They didn't budge. Not even with the convenience that makes RCS popular in the U.S.

It even leads me to believe that Google's Trends statistics for searches on how to "delete #facebook", "delete #instagram" and "delete whatsapp" for my region are not but a lie, even when they're at a consistent 60% to 70% of searches from people in that region.

I feel extremely hurt and sad, because it means that common sense has failed against the convenience of Meta as a mainstay.

I'm extremely pained because it weakens my stance against Meta and their new community guidelines, and how they allow discriminating women and the LGBTQ+.

And for that, with all my heart, I want to say:

I'm sorry.

I'm sorry to all of you I know on Mastodon, Bluesky and the fediverse at large.

I'm sorry to all of you women and trans people that I know and I'm friends with.

I failed you all.

did you know that exposur.es (@mgmt) uses @protonprivacy for the email service?

typically, when you sign up for a platform or reach out for support, companies often use numerous ‘partners’, ‘affiliates’, and ‘service providers’ and they fold them into their so-called privacy policy so all companies involved get a slice of your data without you ever realizing it.

with exposur.es, i wanted to stay true to @pixelfed’s instance honor code to which we all must agree that says we commit to not tracking members.

so if you got a confirmation email after signing up or reached out via email for support, your data wasn’t being harvested by the platform, by me, or by the email “service provider”! better still, if you also use Proton, our emails are fully secured by their zero-knowledge encryption (it’s like end-to-end encryption but only we have the keys, unlike Whatsapp or Gmail)!

そもそもこのメタ社に対しては、Facebookの実名登録というルールが、
ポリシー的な感覚として、個人的には相容れないところがある
（Instagram、Threadsなどは匿名登録可能だけどね）

サービス開始の頃は、ザッカーバーグは◯ホなんちゃうん？
と思ったものだ！（笑）
まぁ、それはそれとして、アチラは大金持ちなのは間違いない
（つまり世の中的には大成功！）

でも、それでもオンラインゲームとかSNSで
フルネームを使ってる人が多いのは、ザッカーバーグのせいだと思うし、
この状況を如何なものだろうか、とは目にするたびに思う

多分、やる気になれば、2割程度は名前・住所を特定できる気がする
いや、もっと確率高いかな？

🇬🇧Consumer-hostile #Whatsapp messenger will soon be interoperable - we #Pirates ensured this via the #DMA. In the coming months, we will be able to switch to better and open messenger services such as Matrix and continue to communicate with our consenting Whatsapp contacts securely and end-to-end encrypted across platforms using the Signal protocol. Facebook Messenger will also become interoperable, possibly iMessage too.
Anonymous use of the participating alternative messenger services remains possible, and Whatsapp only receives data on messages sent across platforms.

Even if Threema and Signal want to stay on the sidelines at first, I am confident that more and more messenger services will join in over time, because interoperability is the future and brings real competition and real freedom of choice!

Auch wenn Threema und Signal anfangs außen vor bleiben wollen, bin ich zuversichtlich, dass mit der Zeit immer mehr Messengerdienste mitmachen werden, denn Interoperabilität ist die Zukunft und bringt echten Wettbewerb und echte Wahlfreiheit!

— Apps will need to sign an agreement with Meta, then connect to its servers.
— Meta wants people to use the Signal Protocol, but also says other encryption protocols can be used if they can meet WhatsApp's standards
— WhatsApp has been testing with Matrix in recent months, although nothing is agreed yet. Swiss app Threema says it won't become interoperable
