@SDF Wow, I have very fond memories of this machine as it was the first instance of netmbx, our public access Unix system that was later running on a Xenix box. It had a couple of dialin modems connected to it and polled tub aka db0tui6 using UUCP

Happy I Love Free Software Day! 💕

Unfortunately, this year I could not join nor organize any in-person celebration, BUT of course I want to share my gratitude to the many, countless #FreeSoftware services I don’t merely use, but actually depend on.

Last year, I decided to focus only on #YunoHost, because it would have been crazy to list all the projects I use and I love.

This time, even if I will most certainly forget someone, I am challenging myself to mention all the #LibreSoftware my life is powered by.

Without further ado, THANK YOU to:

  • @yunohost, for powering Nebuchadnezzar
  • @fedora, for running my beloved #Framework laptop
  • @frameworkcomputer, for designing and building repairable, #Linux-friendly and truly open hardware
  • @gnome and @GTK, for being just gorgeous
  • @calyxos (thus @LineageOS), for powering my #Fairphone5
  • #Obtainium, for making me directly download apps on my phone, and @fdroidorg for distributing them
  • #AuroraStore, for proxying the download of apps I am doomed to get from Google Play
  • @element, for developing #Synapse, even though the new proprietary Synapse Pro is VERY PROBLEMATIC AND DISAPPOINTING
  • #Fractal, for being the most beautiful and awesome #Matrix client ever
  • @signalapp, for keeping me connected with the people I love
  • @Mastodon, for also maintaining a feature-packed experimental fork (#GlitchSoc), that is what Pan runs
  • #Tuba and #Moshidon, for being the most beautiful and awesome #Mastodon clients ever
  • #Firefox, for still remaining the best possible #browser choice, despite #Mozilla’s governance messiness
  • @openstreetmap, for allowing us to find the right path, both literally and metaphorically!
  • @organicmaps, for being the simplest, cleanest, yet feature-rich #OSM client and navigation app
  • @protonvpn, for making me browse safely from/to anywhere in the planet and @protonprivacy #ProtonMail, for hosting my email, despite the latest alarming political statements…
  • @libreoffice, for allowing me to draft documents with ease, the last of which was my #CV
  • #LanguageTool, for preventing me from making embarassing spelling mistakes
  • @photoprism, for safely storing and indexing all my photographic memories, on Aby, and for providing stellar and friendly support too!
  • #Actual, for moderating the very likely risk of ending up completely broke, since it forces me to manage my finances consciously and coherently
  • @readeck, for storing and sorting ALL my varied and overwhelming inputs
  • @nextcloud, for storing and synchronizing my data, for its #calendar, its #tasks, and all its awesome apps
  • #Rustdesk, for preventing my friends and family members from going crazy, by allowing me to remotely connect to their devices and directly address the issues they have
  • #Listmonk, for sending out my newsletter
  • @eleventy, for powering all the websites I maintain, above all the virtual representation of my mind, and for being the only reason why I resist and try to continue learning #JavaScript
  • @forgejo, for giving us a chance to truly control and collectively develop the sources of our software, but most importantly @Codeberg, for RESISTING, RESISTING, RESISTING, despite the hatred and attacks nazi assholes throw at them
  • @musicbrainz for keeping music knowledge open and free, and @ListenBrainz for scrobbling the crazy music I listen to
  • The @fsfe, for promoting this celebration and fighting the good fight!

Lastly, but most importantly, the biggest thank you goes to all the free software libraries and dependencies the above mentioned #software are made of/built with, including #C, #JavaScript, #Python, #Rust, and all community-maintained programming languages.

I am super sorry if I forgot someone!

I'm a
#Programmer/#SoftwareEngineer. I'm most fluent in #Python, have some basics in #Java and #C++, but I'm also taking up new languages like #Javascript and others in my eternal journey of getting better and minimising the impostor syndrome that befalls pretty much all programmers (I feel). I'm also very experienced in #CloudNative/#DevOps technologies, and have been the one devising solutions and maintaining infrastructure in a fast-paced startup environment in my previous employment.

I'm passionate in what I do and those that know me here or IRL would know that I'm always
yapping about the things I'm learning or working on - I love discussing them, and I love helping people out - esp those on the same boat as me.

This passion has led me into writing and maintaining tons of
#FOSS projects like Mango: a content distribution framework based on #Django for #Mastodon and #Bluesky that powers various bots of mine like @lowyat@mastodon.social and @waktusolat@mastodon.social, Charts: a #Helm chart repository for an easy and reproducible deployment strategy for all my projects and everything else I self-host on my #homelab, and Orked: O-tomated #RKE2 distribution, a collection of scripts I wrote that are comprehensively documented to enable everyone to self-host a production-grade #Kubernetes cluster for absolutely free in their homes.

I'm based in Malaysia, but I'm open to just about any on-site, hybrid, or remote job opportunities anywhere. In the meantime though, I'm actively looking for a job in countries like
#Japan and #Singapore, in a bid for a desperate lifestyle change. I've linked below my Portfolio (which you too, could self-host your own!), for those who'd wish to connect/learn more of me. Thank you ❤️

J'orbite dans le développement logiciel (pas front), #fosdem , #python , #c++ .
En ajoutant une pointe de SCRUM master et de manager.

J'aime lire, la randonné, courir.
Voila

You asked for system services written in #Vala, and even on phones?
We present #q6meowd, a service for correctly switching between speaker and earpiece audio output on incoming calls by @NekoCWD :
meowd: gitlab.postmarketos.org/NekoCW
#postmarketos MR: gitlab.postmarketos.org/postma
Previously the logic was written in #C, so isn't this an improvement? :D
Also if you are interested in how to write #ALSA and #DBUS code with Vala, I recommend looking into the sources!

I got decai (radare2's AI-assisted decompiler) to work with a local model, and tried it over a basic Caesar implementation in C and in Dart.

To be honest, I think the conclusion is that the model I selected is not good enough ;) but #r2ai and #decai are really great tools. Read my post to understand how to install, configure and use. Or RTFM :P

many thanks to @Pancake for his patience! "it's not working on my laptop", "try this then" etc

I think there would be still space for systems programming language with a constraint from day zero that it would 1:1 compatible with plain C”s binary layout and memory model:

  1. Roughly just .text, .bss, .rodata and ,data.
  2. No symbol mangling at all.

All the memory safety etc. fancy features would be then designed within exactly those constraints.

#Rust is essentially a derivative of C++ when compiled to binary, which does not really make it a strong competitor for plain #C. It can substitute C in many cases for sure, just like C++ did, but there’s always need for minimal systems programming language, which also looks elegant in binary, not just in source code.

A compiled C program can be quite easily understood with a binary with no debug symbols at all if you understand the CPU architecture well enough. That is, and will be a strong asset for C.

Any experienced C developers among my followers? #BoostsWelcome.

Expat, arguably the world's most popular #XML parser, is understaffed and without funding. As #xz has shown, situations like this are dangerous.

Last month, maintainer Sebastian Pipping put up a plea for help at github.com/libexpat/libexpat/b

(I would help myself, but my C skills barely surpass "Hello, World".)

Hi everyone!

I've rejoined the Fediverse and have been here on and off since the beginning, so I'm familiar with everything.

I love popular culture, reading books, watching movies, and occasionally playing video games. I also do #photography but rarely share the pictures online. I have two cats.

I'm a software developer. At work, I exclusively use functional programming languages, but in my free time, I write in #Rust or #C++.

Nice to meet you!
