I was on the internet very early because an old BBS operator had his system hooked up to the internet through a college campus. This was before AOL was even hooked up to the internet. It was truly a different kind of internet back then. It had not been commercialized yet. I played MUDs which were the precursor to graphic MMOs (think Zork but with other players). But the internet kept expanding. I avoided Ultima Online as I was too busy. But coworkers would go and on about it. Then Everquest hit. I played it just a tiny bit through a friends computer just to see what it was. But I avoided it as I was too busy. But then World of Warcraft hit. In my little slice of the cosmos, it seemed like everyone was playing WoW. It seemed bigger than D&D. And more and more women were playing WoW. For whatever reason in the 80s and 90s, the ratio of men to women in conventions and gaming groups was very lopsided (in my slice of the world). It seemed like WoW was the lever fantasy rpgs needed to break into mainstream and not be so stigmatized.
