Dammit people, do you not see the crossroads we are at? We are in Nazi Germany, at the twilight of civility before fascism firmly takes root and can no longer be stopped. You can't just stand there aghast and scandalized and talk about how it's illegal or shocking or vile. If we don't take *action*, the chance for action will pass.

We are witnessing the active consolidation of power by a fascist government as politicians and judges are arrested and harrassed, people are rounded up and sent to camps, the armed forces are mobilized against our citizens, rule of law is discarded, and war is looming.

What else do you need to see to convince you that we are OUT OF FUCKING TIME? Act now, in defense of your neighbors and your representatives and your nation, or expect it all to be yanked from your hands for the duration of the long, dark night. Maybe people will figure out how to read this wrong or rub it into my face. Truth is, I don't care.

There was a time where this view was sane and "normal". You didn't even have to write it down because everybody knew it was considered the norm. But where are we now, having to explain all of this again?

Why isn't the world going insane at Republican politicians visiting concentration camps and posing in front of people who will likely be dead within the decade.

This wasn't even normal in 1942. It's not even normal in North Korea - Fascist regimes usually keep their death camps a secret.

We cannot rely on the US to protect or nurture the commons. Think of the US as a giant shopping mall with guns. That’s it. That’s the whole philosophy right there.

We want to safeguard the infrastructure of civilisation, we have to do it ourselves here in the EU before it’s too late. And we can start by acknowledging our own failures and redoubling our commitment to fundamental rights and democracy (and not limit our own potential by having every single decision framed by the fucking “Single Market”).

You want to end up like the US? Then let’s keep going as we are. You want something different? We must invest in the commons, embrace our diversity, embrace equity, and move to an inclusive, post-capitalist existence.

It’s up to us. The bacteria in places we haven’t even visited yet that will survive long after we’ve made ourselves extinct – should that be the route we decide to take (because yes, it is a decision) – don’t really give two shits either way.

The report refers to ongoing events in the U.S. as unprecedented, mentioning Trump pardoning 1,500 criminals who supported him; firing independent agency watchdogs without process; purging apolitical police and military brass; ignoring laws; and his unilaterally deleting federal programs, and even a whole organization, created by U.S. Congress.

He's just called his predecessor's pardons void and vacated. He gave a bitterly partisan speech at the Department of Justice, demanding the prosecution of the media and certain adversaries. He threatened numerous universities with sanctions. He invoked a 227-year-old war measures law during peacetime — for the first time ever — to deport accused gang members without due process. And, most importantly, when that deportation plan wound up in court, he may have — although it's still in dispute — defied a court order, cracking the ultimate constitutional safeguard.

It's not just the scope of what Trump's done that has Lindberg envisioning the once-unthinkable: removing the U.S. from the democratic list and shifting it to the second-lowest tier among five, to a so-called electoral autocracy. It's also the speed.

Lindberg said Trump is doing many of the same things as Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Turkey, Viktor Orbán in Hungary and Narendra Modi in India — only faster.

"It's the pace," Lindberg said. "He's trying to do in a few months what it took them eight to 10 years to achieve.… It's very dire."
