I'm a computer science professor from #Oregon. Hobbies include #fire #dancing, #boardgames (including #go), #drawing, and #GameDesign.
I'm not new here, but my old #introduction no longer fits, so here we are.
I'm a wizened (and withering) game dev since 2004, with credits on Warhawk, Starhawk, LEGO Brawls, and Destiny 2. I mainly do design, but I've also got a tech background and I don't shy away from engineering.
I'm currently exploring more writing and linear storytelling, which were my original passions before I fell into games and got hella burned out.
I started my career 16 years ago designing games for social networks. But I never wanted our social networks to become games. In this piece I approach the problem of modern social media through the lens of game design. What happens when we quantify the value of our connections to others?
Dev Log # 2.1
Scenarios. From the archives; an early prototype of the game took place in South America and was inspired by Buen Vivir, cinco saberes, sailcargo movement, degrowth, etc. Each scenario has unique buildings and resources, and the "Costa Buen vivir" (temp name) scenario is all about wood and nature and smaller scale de-pollution work.
#blogpost | #betweendrafts — As of today, The Ludotronics Game Design Methodology Is Available for Pre-Order!
Even if you don’t want to or can’t preorder at the moment, you can spread the word! That’ll make me happy too.
Hello, fediverse! An #introduction:
We are Eggplant: The Secret Lives of Games—six game developers who have candid conversations with other game creators that dive deep into the art, craft, and process of making games

I'm all over the moon. The post arrived and with it, my Potluck deck is now a physical reality.
Potluck is a semi-universal deck designed by me that fits into a pocket and plays all sorts of amazing games – perfect for quick breaks at work, for making new friends when traveling and passing time when waiting for things.
I've written about it more in detail on my website: https://hamatti.org/tabletop/potluck/
Where does one even start with an #introduction? I guess the important part is just starting.
Fair enough! I went to school for #GameDesign, but then I got distracted by game #Streaming, then running studios on #Twitch, then #baking streaming, then a pandemic and finding out I have #ADHD. Now I'm here and trying to figure out what's next.
Also, I have a love for vintage fashion and binge #GBBO on repeat.
I'm BoofTroupe (he/him/his) but you can call me Boof.
I stream on https://twitch.tv/BoofTroupe
I make games at https://MBDC-games.itch.io
I post mostly about #magicthegathering specifically #mtglimited but I will occasionally post about #gamedesign or whatever's on my mind.
I hope you're doing great!
This, in my opinion, is the #solarpunk #gamedesign that we were missing: not building something in the ruins of the old world, with the same tech trees, but consciously _shedding_, _learning_, _balancing_ and _coexisting_ with what's already there.
Such a #game would not only feel different: thematically, in the core loop, spiritually, but could also teach us something, change how we see the world around us and how we think about our daily lives.
You did not unlock a new skill with 500 Science Points, you didn't scan 23 new plants. You learned how the ecosystem works and you are in balance with it.
This is the part that usually gets montage-d in all the movies where the protagonist "learns the way of the wild" etc.
But let's not gloss over it this time, let's make it #gamedesign , #gamemechanic , where the #game >is< about that.
Imagine giving the players a feeling similar to the last loop in #outerWilds : it's the same as the first one, and yet everything is different, because of your knowledge, of the context you have. You don't see enemies, you see animals you can coexist with, you don't see impossible obstacles, you see nature you can be a part of, give and take.
For me that's a #solarpunk #gamedesign for #degrowth
#solarpunk #gamedesign idea:
Survival game where you learn to be a part of an ecosystem and slowly abandon your unsustainable "tech tree" replacing it with sustainable, local solutions.
---
A lot of games are trying to replicate very expansionist core loops, be it Minecraft's, Factorio's and so on, which see the player as a force acting on the environment / ecosystem, not working together with it.
Why not change it?

although now long forgotten as a historical curio of 2000s web idealism, the OLPC "One Laptop Per Child" project attempted to produce a low-cost, high-reliability laptop suitable for kids in low-income environments.
one of the upshots of the program was that SimCity was open-sourced for the OLPC XO-1 computer, and it was included on every machine. this little article by don hopkins does a great job of tracing its history through Sun Microsystems.

I'm ready to start playtesting a little emoji-based RPG idea I have. If you want to play or follow along I'm calling it #2BitRPG.
This is a "paper" prototype and I'm the mechanical turk as I figure out what does and doesn't work well. It will eventually become a bot.
This is also my first time making a game since I was 10 and the first time as a game master since my teens. Wish me luck!
