Time for that "Looking for work!" post, I guess!

Unfortunately, my current role is impacted by Amazon's move to mandatory co-location for teams, and my family is far too settled in Brooklyn to move away now. So after 7 years at Amazon, I'm starting the search.

I'm looking for a new role as a Front-end engineer/Design technologist/UX Engineer. I like design systems. And CSS. And accessibility. Love those things.

Continued thread

We're used to computers that read our code and execute it. But we know that doesn't always go as planned: "I really hate this damned machine – I wish that they would sell it. It never does quite what I mean but only what I tell it.". We know what it's like to say something, have the computer misunderstand it, do something unexpected, and we tweak what we said to make it act as desired.

I got a LinkedIn prompt to write something about the benefits of programmers working remotely. I thought I'd take a different angle on this than most of the respondents did: Focusing on ways programmers can use their skills to communicate with remote colleagues better.

Prose or code, communicating clearly and specifically is key. As programmers, we have a special type of experience writing what we mean for one specific audience!

Time for a proper introduction!

I'm an open-source enthusiast and self-hosting masochist. Initially a #JavaScript developer, still doing all things web, big #WebAssembly fan, recovering conference addict. I am also a #DevRel focusing on #DevEx & OSS communities in particular and a staunch advocate of flexible, async remote work.

I co-founded #RustFest¹ with @jer & @skade :ferris:

I post about #conferences, #remoteWork, my #homelab & #selfhosting hobby (currently rebuilding, follow along at #homelabNG )

At my day job at radiopaedia.org I mostly complain about Ruby/Rails or DICOM² :ablobcatbongokeyboard:

I'm a Hungarian living in Tallinn with my two dogs @lumi & @iris :blobdogheart: Follow #pupdate, or #doggytrip for our travel updates.

Thoughts on moving to a more #rural area ...

Like many, we moved out of the city because of #remotework. We have 2.5 acres, lots of wildlife, and easy access to awesome outdoors activities. Last night after I logged off, I hopped in the truck w/ my fishing kayak, caught three trout, and was back in two hours. If we want to head into town, it's just 25 minutes away.

We meet people three ways: Walking with our dog, dropping off/picking up kids at the school bus stop, and social events that neighbors host.

The irony is that it's easier to approach and talk to people here because people don't have their guard up like you need to do in the city. When you're in an urban area, you generally want to be careful about who you interact with.

I rode the bus into downtown Seattle and Bellevue for 15 years. I used to play chess in Westlake Park during my lunch breaks (see photo). Yeah, I miss some of those old times. But a lot of what I liked is gone now.

Generally, rural areas will be more conservative. I'm fine with people holding stupid opinions. I don't need to agree with them, but I can treat them like people and more than just their politics.

If you can, I recommend making the #rurallife move. I think it's good for society to have more diverse opinions in #ruralamerica.
