Lorry<p>There is a slight nuance on the <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Shadowban" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Shadowban</span></a> thing that was often used as a best practice years ago. Scammers, bots, or bad-actors would often be shadow banned on a timer of hours to days, then fully banned. If they don't notice the shadow-ban they carry on wasting time and effort doing what they are doing.</p><p>It doesn't really work any more, and hasn't for years - They use other accounts to check that the message was really posted, and scammers dump their payloads in minutes then ditch and move on.</p>

part of why i had to speak on recent #shadowbanning issues between emacs.li and mastodon.social is that i found myself momentarily considering not saying anything for fear of a #shadowban from the latter instance. i cannot imagine that mastodon.social intends for anyone speaking freely with rationality and good faith to experience such a fear. at the moment i am not convinced that i have not been #shadowbanned by m.s based on criteria i have seen so far that to they constitutes reason to censor.
