I'm a bit curious how other people engage with photography and art on . Do you typically click the 1:1 button on the media overlay and admire pictures in full resolution, when using the web app?

@Gargron not only did I not know that the button was there, now that I have clicked it, I have no idea what it does

@Gargron the same effect can be achieved on official android app, by tapping a picture to make it fullscreen, then double-tapping it to make it 1:1, right ?

@Gargron I click on the image and opens big 😀

@Gargron I had no idea...

Now I can read the comics, where the text is too small. o_O

Thank you so much! :)

@Gargron
Long press, open in new tab.
Mobile view in Safari is unusable.

@Gargron
I thought 1:1 was an aspect ratio (square pic), like 3:4 or 9:16.

The only place I see a 1:1 option is in my photo editor, never in any of my #HephalumpWorld apps.

I always just double tap to go "full view."

@Gargron currently i am using an old laptop with debian. Works pretty well, but the display resolution is only hd. So everytime i click the 1:1 button, it zooms in like crazy :blobcatreading:

@Gargron depending on the image of course 😁

@Gargron I rarely use the web app, I mostly use a third party app on my phone.

@Gargron I've seen the button, but never tried it. Not only was I unaware of the feature, but also I was not really interested to find out 😅.

Thanks for mentioning this feature!

@Gargron Thanks! Today I learned something new! Pls ask this again in a couple months!

@Gargron "I don't use the Web App".

@Gargron Re image scrolling, the UI behavior most familiar to me to is that regular scroll wheel operates vertically, and shift scroll wheel for horizontal. I hesitate to mention it because I assume the departure is intentional.

@Gargron Cool. Some user feedback (mastodon.acm.org running v4.3.6 viewing Matt's 2048x1152 59th St Bridge image on a 2560x1440 screen)...
1. The 1:1 button disappears when the window is wider than the image, but also if you click the image. Confusing.
2. Yet, when button exists, seems to maximize the image (zooms in even more than 1:1, so it becomes full screen).
3. Would love to have options for separate full-screen and 1:1 buttons on the initial presentation, to reduce clicking.

@Gargron one option is missing from your poll: I have no idea what is an 1:1 button

I very rarely use the Mastodon web app

@Gargron I use Ivory. Not sure if that gives us 1:1 by default or if that feature is hidden somewhere in the app. @paul

@Gargron I wasn't able to, bc I only updated from v4.2.x just yesterday. 😅

@Gargron It could also be interesting to know, how much the results would differ between instances.

Imo, unless your instance is all about high fidelity images and Art, there wouldn't be much use for this feature. On the contrary, I was thinking about some kind of automatic downscaling feature to a max-resolution/max file size to allow for more economical and lightweight server builds (if this isn't possible, already).

@Gargron I almost never use the web app. I’m 95% using Mona on my iPhone and use the desktop app on MacOS.

@Gargron I never used Mastodon on the web. But I often look up the full (larger?) view on the Tusky app.

@Gargron I guess I never noticed it.

I tend to right-click and select "Open Image In New Tab" and look at the high-res file that way.

Now that I know it's there, I'll probably use it more often.

@Gargron I use the Mastodon app in iOS. Is the same as the website app?

@Gargron Now, that's good PR for a feature - asking how many are using it already 😁

@Gargron

Sometimes. It's nice to dig into images when they are especially captivating. Or when there's a set of them, instead of a solo pic.

@Gargron I think when one asks this kind of question that it is important to specify the specific user interface that you for which you are inquiring. There are so many different user interfaces for Mastodon, from the default web version on a desktop browser, mobile web, custom web interfaces, and a variety of different mobile apps. The user experience on these permutations can widely vary, and a feature that is taken for granted by one user's experience, may be unknown to many others.

@Gargron Yes, but only if it seems worth it, and if I'm on the browser, because Fedilab, which I use on Android, doesn't have the 1:1 button (it zooms in twice and then back by double-tapping, though)

@Gargron Dunno what that is, but also I keep my phone display settings intentionally poor to make the internet less enjoyable, so no I don't much admire art on here

@Gargron not present on mobile where I mostly view mastodon.

@Gargron My client doesn't have that as far as I know.

@Gargron Honestly, I tend to open images in a new tab instead since I get to use my browser's own image viewing mode. 1:1 mode is about as usable as I could expect it to be, though, so I'd probably use that on mobile.

@Gargron
I use a 3rd party App that fits pictures to my screen and I can zoom in if I want to. I am happy with this.

@Gargron

I do use it! And!

There are times when the size is "small" (in the sense that it's a very large image and I need to zoom in, common when people make a webcomic in a single attachment rather than separating by frame). In my experience this button disables my ability to zoom - is that expected?

@Gargron
Are you aware that not all clients have the same Features? I'm using Fedilab and there is no 1:1 Button. I can click on Pictures to get them to fill most of my Screen but the Client doesn't load them at a reduced Resolution at all so I don't have to do anything to get full Resolution.

@FinchHaven
I'm using it for years now. I experienced Bugs twice but I was not stupid enough to cry on some Web Page, instead I reached out to the Publisher on Mastodon and the Bugs got fixed in no time. I tried a few other clients but to me Fedilab is the Non Plus Ultra.
@Gargron

@HailSatan

Dude

@Gargron does not "publish" Fedilab

I don't think you really understand how this works

@FinchHaven
I never said he is. @apps is the Account of the Publishers. I just reacted to the Link you shared leading to a Page showing multiple issues with Fedilab. Perhaps I didn't really understood what you've been trying to say but my English isn't any good and it would be a compliment to call it mediocre.
@Gargron

@HailSatan
There is an option in settings for years that allows to display not cropped media in timelines :)
@FinchHaven @Gargron

@Gargron
I don’t use it… when I click on @mattblaze lovely photos, for instance, the 1:1 makes absolutely no changes to what I see in the browser on my tablet.
I am not sure when it is supposed to work, sorry.

@AdminKirsty @Gargron In the case of my photos, I upload them at a relatively low resolution, with a link to the full-res version available on flickr. So the 1:1 button for my photos generally doesn't have many extra pixels to display beyond the default.

@AdminKirsty @Gargron My understanding (and @Gargron can correct me I'm wrong) is that the 1:1 button will show you the full resolution for much larger images, such as you might find from pixelfed instances. But I keep the versions I post here smaller to avoid completely hammering the instance I'm on.

@mattblaze @AdminKirsty Correct, it zooms to actual size, same as the 1:1 button in the photo viewer on Windows, though I would like to point out that Mastodon keeps a higher resolution right now than you would find on Pixelfed—much to my disappointment as I like to zoom on anything that catches my eye and Pixelfed uploads leave a lot to be desired.

@Gargron

Ok, back on the slightly larger laptop now (it's only 15") and can see a difference in behaviour. It enlarges the image with most of the image being out of screen... thanks.

@mattblaze

@AdminKirsty @mattblaze Use the mouse to pan the image.

@Gargron @AdminKirsty @mattblaze

If I might add, I'm using 1:1 frequently on the web interface on the phone but panning in this mode is (if I might add this word) screwed. Only works if I start with the finger move downwards. Only then panning to right / left works. This leads me for a long time to think that this function does not work. Android phone with Firefox.

@AdminKirsty I'm curious, how large is your screen?

@Gargron
Mini… 🫣

And yes, it makes clicking on some buttons a tad awkward.

@Gargron i make them regulary "big" - or zoom in - but i never remember sawing something like 1:1
(edit : now i checked an saw it, like how decent it is - an i guess i will use it in future time by time)

@Gargron : I noticed the 1:1 button just earlier this week ! And since I'm almost always on desktop, it's rare for the image not to already fill my screen anyway.

@Gargron I right click and open image in a new tab 😉

@ranx Acceptable answer.

@Gargron @ranx Most of time the 1:1 button doesn't work for me, only after I right click and open image in a new tab, I close the web page and try to click 1:1 button again then it finally shows full resolution. I don't know why.

I have a 13" laptop and a 27" display, all the same.

@Gargron Did not know but I'd rather use it

@Gargron never saw the 1:1 button, neither in nor in Deck in the browser 🤔

@Slash909uk @DJGummikuh @Gargron It only shows up if the image's available resolution is higher than what is being displayed
